The meeting was called to order at 5:25 p.m. by Prof. Bates.
This special meeting was called to discuss the search process for a
new University President, and to appoint faculty to the search committee.
The Senate was asked by the Board Chairman Jack Kennedy to move quickly
in making those appointments. Senate officers met this morning with
Board members Edmond Villani and Hans Ziegler to discuss the attributes
desirable in a new University President. The search committee will
be composed of approximately 17 people, including at least 6 faculty, probably
two from each campus.
At a Senate Steering Committee meeting, Prof. Bates was asked to contact
the Board to request three Senate appointments, one from each campus.
There was some discussion that any search committee for senior academic
administrators should have a majority or even 2/3 faculty. It was
moved that
The sense of the Senate is that 2/3 of such search committees should
be faculty, half appointed by the Senate.
This was seconded. Prof. Martire felt that it was more likely
to be agreed to that one half of such committees should be faculty.
The motion was amended to
The sense of the Senate is that one half of such search committees should
be faculty, half appointed by the Senate.
The motion passed unanimously, as amended.
The Senate Steering Committee had previously forwarded Professors Bates
and Lumpkin as nominees for the Senate to consider; Prof. Diamond was selected
as the third Senate nominee, if the third appointee is granted. Those
three names were moved, seconded and approved, with two in opposition and
two abstentions.
A list of additional suggestions for the Presidential search committee
was also considered. Further names were added from the floor.
Thirteen names were approved as suggestions from the Main Campus faculty,
with one opposed and 7 abstaining. The 13 faculty are: Anthony Arend,
Deborah A. Lesko Baker, James Collins, Susan M. Collins, Wayne A. Davis,
Kim F. Hall, John P. Langan,S.J., William C. McFadden,S.J., James Reardon-Anderson,
Pietra Rivoli, Nancy Sherman, James F. Slevin, and Lisa Zucarelli.
Five Law School faculty were unanimously approved as suggested Search
Committee members. They are Sherman L. Cohn, Steve Goldberg, Patricia King,
Wallace Mlyniec, and Wendy C. Perdue. Eight Medical Center faculty
were also approved, with two abstaining and one against. They are Michael
Cole, Aviad Haramati, Donald Massaro, Adam K. Myers, John Richert, Carolyn
Robinowitz, Sarah Speigel, and Jean Wrathall.
The suggestion was made that a discussion of the desirability of having
a Jesuit President be placed on the agenda of a future Senate meeting or
a town meeting sponsored by the Senate.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:15 p.m.
