(new senators)
The meeting was convened by Professor Bates in the Program Room,
Leavey Center at 4:26 p.m.
- Minutes: The minutes of the last Faculty Senate meeting were
not ready.
- Report of the Main Campus Election: This was item 5 on the
agenda, but was moved to item 2: Father Witek, Chair of the
Main Campus Faculty Election committee, reviewed the elections.
He was concerned that there was a decreased number of faculty
running for the Faculty Senate. In 1996, there were 31
candidates for 16 slots; in1997, 17 candidates for 11 slots
and in 1998,19 candidates for 18 slots. Hopefully, there
will be more candidates in the future. However, the current
election has brought forth 10 new people to the Faculty Senate.
For the first time the results were put out on e-mail, and in
the future the results should be put out of the Senate web page.
- Introduction of New Senators: New Senators were introduced
except for the Law Center which was in the middle of lengthy
election procedures.
- Faculty Senate Awards:
Professor Richard Bates
Professor Aviad Haramati
Professor Wayne Davis
- Appointment to Committees: At the beginning of the meeting
senators were providesd with a list of the nominees for Faculty
Senate appointments to committees for the 1997-98 academic year.
In the majority of cases there was a single nominee for each
position, and the Senate unanimously approved these candidates.
In cases where there were more than one nominee for a position
the Senators conducted a ballot. Those candidates that garnered
the most votes formed a slate that was approved unanimously.
- Officers of the Senate: Professor Adams Myers is stepping
down as President of the Medical Caucus of the University Faculty
Senate as of July1, 1998. The Medical Caucus has voted
that Professor Michael Cole be elected to take Professor Myers
place. The University Faculty unanimously affirmed this
change in leadership of the Medical Caucus. As Professor Cole
is currently Secretary of the Faculty Senate a vote was taken
to replace Professor Cole with Professor Myers. This exchange
of positions was accepted unanimously.
- Other Business: There are some developments that may require
an additional meeting of the Faculty Senate:
A meeting of the Fringe Benefits Committee that will consider
the potential addition of Blue Cross and Blue Shield and other
plans to the Health Care providers.
Search committees for EVPs, Chairs etc.
The meeting adjourned at 5:52 p.m.
